Objectives

The mobility sector covers the systems and technologies that enable the movement of people and goods, including transport infrastructure, digital mobility solutions as well as urban and rural mobility. Across Europe, the sector is confronted with a dual transition of sustainability and digitalisation. The adoption of new technologies, an increasing digital complexity and continuous sustainability requirements are even more pressing given recent economic pressures and broader instability.

To provide a space to address these challenges and opportunities, the Thematic Working Group on Mobility has been established as a platform for exchange and collaboration among members of the EDIH Network and affiliated partners, aligned with the Apply AI strategy pillar on mobility. The working group facilitates the sharing of experiences, current activities and practices among EDIHs active in the mobility domain, and to support collaboration through targeted discussions and joint exchange.

A central aim is to translate EU mobility legislation and strategies into regionally anchored, practical solutions. The working group focuses in particular on mobility‑related needs of public sector organisations and SMEs, including data-based solutions for transport and mobility, autonomous driving, and smart cities and regions.

Its expertise spans the full spectrum of digital and innovative mobility development:

  • Mobility data collection, management, provision, and integration form the foundation for evidence‑based planning and interoperable mobility services.
  • AI‑driven analysis, modelling, and decision support enable the identification of mobility patterns, simulation of traffic dynamics, and development of data‑informed policy options.
  • Exploration, deployment, and testing of autonomous mobility support regions in evaluating technological readiness and designing real‑world use cases.
  • Digital twins for road infrastructure provide virtual environments to assess conditions, predict stress factors, and plan resilient investments.
  • Intelligent approaches to promote modal shift and sustainable behaviour leverage behavioural insights and digital incentives to encourage environmentally friendly mobility choices.

Meetings

The next meeting of the Thematic Working Group on Mobility will take place in June 2026, where members of the group will meet during the EDIH Summit 2026 for an in‑person exchange session.

Previous meetings:

The Kick‑off Meeting of the Thematic Working Group on Mobility took place on 9 April 2026 and marked the official launch of the group, providing an initial space for EDIHs to exchange on mobility‑related topics and activities as well as sector specific discussions of the Apply AI strategy.
