About the Spotlight series
The EDIH Spotlight series showcases digital innovation hubs across Europe and the difference they make for SMEs and public organisations. In each edition, we introduce a hub, its mission and how it supports organisations on their digital and AI journeys.
About EDOcobot
EDOcobot is a Danish EDIH network, with a focus on robotics, AI, Cybersecurity and other technologies related to robotics and automation. Its purpose is to improve robot skills and increase the deployment of useful collaborative robots (cobots) in SMEs and small mid-caps and thereby support production in Denmark and Europe, supporting DIGITAL objectives. The core services are similar to other EDIH’s, encompassing Test Before Invest,Skills and training, Funding and Network and EU-infrastructure. Whilst EDOcobot is mainly concerned about robotics and automation in manufacturing, it also covers other areas such as personal care and MedTech.
Interview with Lars Kristensen, Project Manager of EDOcobot
What is your vision for digital transformation in your region or domain?
We guide companies on deploying of robots and other automation systems together with education of employees in the companies to operate the equipment. Furthermore, we guide companies on how to finance the buying of robots.
Could you share a recent success story where your Hub supported an SME or a public sector organisation?
A Danish manufacturer of cargo bikes needed help to produce some plastic parts in a better way to avoid stressful working positions for employees. We tested a solution using robots and they have now purchased a robot system for that purpose.
What do you see as the biggest impact your Hub has had so far in the local or regional ecosystem?
The biggest impact is on skills and training where about 400 companies have joined some of our theme days, seminars, mini fairs and so on. The companies are spread all over Denmark.
What are the key digital challenges facing organisations in your region or sector today?
The key challenge has been to make companies invest in robots and automation equipment due to uncertainty about economics, customs, war and other things.
How does your Hub help companies overcome these challenges?
By giving them knowledge and skills within robotics, automation, AI and other technologies.
What is the most common obstacle that SMEs or public bodies raise when working with you, and how do you help them address it?
Companies and public bodies very much want competencies and knowledge, but they hesitate to invest in equipment. So, we give them competencies and knowledge in the first place.
How do you collaborate with other EDIHs, universities, clusters or ecosystem partners?
We collaborate closely with other Danish EDIH’s about general project management, financing and so on. We also collaborate with other European EDIH’s mostly on knowledge exchange.
Are there any opportunities for European or international cooperation you find promising at the moment?
Yes, we are in process of establishing contact and collaboration with AI-Factories, TEF’s and other AI organisations within the EU-Infrastructure.
What trends in digital innovation do you believe will shape your region or the sectors you work with in the coming years?
Usage of AI in robotics will certainly rise but also Cybersecurity, IoT, High Performance Computing, management of large amounts of data, general automation and developments in the defence industry.
How is your Hub preparing for the future digital landscape?
By education and development of skills within the mentioned technologies among the EDIH-staff.
What is your top advice for organisations beginning their digital transformation or exploring advanced technologies?
Develop knowledge and education, find enthusiasm amongst the staff, test systems and invest.
What should companies look out for when adopting new technologies responsibly and sustainably?
Be aware of market possibilities and begin with the easiest changes at the lowest costs. Watch the results both on economy and employees. If it is positive, then continue.
