Sustainability

Objectives

Several EDIHs expressed interest in 2023 to work together and share knowledge and experiences on Sustainability.

The objectives of the WG are to exchange experience, good practices, foster cross-EDIH collaboration and facilitate the development of joint solutions and common capacity-building initiatives between EDIHs. The webinars also serve as a platform to showcase EDIHs and their work and discuss policies/regulatory frameworks, funding opportunities, and emerging trends.

The first phase of the WG focused on the following 3 main topics :

  • The first is sustainability of IT itself.
  • The second is the use of it for sustainable solutions.
  • And the third one deals with assessing in a quantitative and qualitative way the sustainability of Digital solutions.

The next phase of the WG, relaunched in April 2026, builds on the Apply AI Strategy, which considers the areas of environment and climate important domains of application and will therefore focus on (i) AI for green applications (e.g., climate resilience, circular economy, waste and water management, crisis management); (ii) AI for productivity (e.g., streamlining reporting, permitting and regulatory compliance), and (iii) Sustainable AI (e.g., reducing the carbon footprint of data centres and algorithms). The WG also aims to promote the adoption of circular economy principles, helping SMEs and public sector organisations reduce waste, optimise resource use, and transition to low-carbon business models through digital tools.
