The European Digital Innovation Hubs Network is driving technological progress and fostering collaboration across the EU. The recent publication of the Characteristics and regional coverage of the European Digital Innovation Hubs network technical report by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) illuminates the hubs’ dynamics and reach.

This resource is here to help policymakers, industry stakeholders, and innovators gain crucial insights into the EDIH Network and Europe’s digital transformation. It aims to guide decisions and reveal new pathways for collaboration and innovation.

Highlighted within the report is the staggering reach of the EDIH network. Present in 85% of European regions and servicing nearly 90% of these areas, the network collectively impacts a significant share of the EU working population.

Moreover, the report emphasises the EDIHs’ proficiency in key technologies supported by the Digital Europe Programme across most European regions. For instance, support for Artificial Intelligence extends to 91% of regions, while coverage for Cybersecurity and High-Performance Computing reaches 73% and 61% respectively.

Notably, most hubs have a strong rooting in the ICT R&I Framework Programme, with 89% of EDIHs boasting participants from such projects within their teams.

Common sectors targeted by EDIHs include Manufacturing (64%), Health Care, and the Public Sector. 

The report also provides an in-depth analysis of EDIHs, their sizes, compositions, and intricate network structures. The findings are enriched by tables, figures, lists, and annexes.

In essence, the report sheds light on the multifaceted nature of these hubs. With their extensive reach, diverse member base, and technological prowess, EDIHs are advancing innovation, bridging experienced players with new actors, and supporting digital transformation across Europe’s business landscape.
