Madrid's biggest innovation hub

Madrid is a Spanish region covering only 1.6% (8,030 km2) of the country’s area but it generates 19,3% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and where 14,2% (6.7 million) of the population of the Country live. Madrid Region has one of the major enterprise’s densities of all country, 85.8 companies per 1,000 inhabitants and it concentrates near 16,2% of all companies in Spain. In total, there are 552,027 enterprises in the Region . This makes Madrid Region a Business decision Centre.

The EDIH MADRID REGION is created with the aim of being the reference Centre to improve the digitization of both public sector and small and medium-sized companies in Madrid Region. To achieve this ambitious goal, EDIH MADRID REGION is made up of a powerful consortium of 11 partners. EDIH MADRID REGION is led (coordinated) and co-financed by the regional government of Madrid. One of the members of the consortium is the Fundación para el Conocimiento madri+d (Fmi+d), which is the coordinator of the Madrid node of the European Enterprise Network (EEN). In this way, it is ensured that EDIH MADRID REGION will offer a continuous service with EEN and Startup Europe. Among the EDIH MADRID REGION partners there are several partners who have a deep understanding of the needs of the entities to which the services to be provided by the EDIH are addressed. EDIH MADRID REGION partners include several partners with extensive experience in developing solutions based on the key digital technologies of the Digital Europe programme.

Based on the key sectors identified in the previous strategy, the regional policies in various areas, the priorities of the Digital Europe program and the experience of the partners of the EDIH MADRID REGION consortium, it has been decided to prioritize the following economic sectors to give their digitization support services:

  • SMEs in the services sector
  • SMEs in the industrial sector: Industry 4.0
  • Regional and municipal public administration
  • The area of mobility

The composition of EDIH MADRID REGION is as follows:

  • Community of Madrid (CM) through the Vice-Ministry of Local Administration and Digitization of the Community of Madrid, on which the Digital Innovation Centre of the Community of Madrid depends. The objective of this partner in the EDIH MADRID REGION is to support a transformative process through the design and development of digital public services, putting the citizen at the centre. The services of this partner will be directed mainly to the regional and municipal public administration of the Community of Madrid. CM will receive the support of MADRIMASD, which will be in charge of managing the technical aspects of the project.
  • The Fundación para el conocimiento madri+d (MADRIMASD) is an initiative of the Ministry of Science, Universities and Research of the Community of Madrid whose main objectives are to contribute to make the quality of higher education, science, technology and innovation a key element of competitiveness and the welfare of citizens. The company will be the partner in charge of carrying out the technical coordination of the project. MADRIMASD will be the partner in charge of carrying out the technical coordination of the project The Fundación madri+d is the coordinator of the European Enterprise Network (EEN) node in Madrid. The Foundation is also the coordinator of the ESA BIC Community of Madrid, which is the Business Incubation Centre of the European Space Agency (ESA). The services of this partner will be aimed mainly at SMEs in the Community of Madrid with special emphasis on startups.
  • Entidad de Gestión de Derechos de los Productores Audiovisuales (EGEDA) is the coordinator of EDUCA LAB, a Digital Innovation Centre that uses  digital resources and advanced digital skills to achieve widespread use of audio-visual works in educational settings. EGEDA, created in 1990, is an intellectual property rights management entity that represents and defends in Spain the interests of audiovisual producers derived from the rights  recognized and protected by the Intellectual Property Law. AV EDUCA LAB is conceived as a digital space for legal audio-visual content useful for education, aimed at the educational community. The services of this partner will be aimed mainly at the regional and municipal public administration of the Community of Madrid, especially in the field of education.
  • EIT Digital: The partner of EDIH MADRID REGION is the Spanish node of EIT Digital, the Innovation and Knowledge Community (KIC) in the ICT sector of the European Institute of Technology (EIT). The EIT Digital is a pan-European organization made up of more than three hundred relevant partners in the digital landscape that has been operating for more than ten years establishing cooperation processes between the different actors to implement  training, acceleration and entrepreneurship services. The Spanish node of EIT DIGITAL is the coordinator of the CIC Hub, whose objective is for the Madrid region to become a recognized pole of excellence in its areas of specialization over the next seven years, with dozens of international technology companies capable to manage and guarantee cybersecurity of critical infrastructures, with special attention to infrastructures associated with mobility. The services of this partner will be aimed mainly at SMEs in the Community of Madrid with special emphasis on the area of mobility.
  • Asociación HUB Movilidad Conectada (CMH) is an innovation ecosystem for new emerging mobility solutions. The objectives of Connected Mobility Hub are to accelerate the transformation towards sustainability of the mobility and transport sector based on the digitization of companies in the sector as well as the promotion of MaaS (Mobility as a Service). It will also attend to the needs of the public sector (Local Administration, fundamentally) in the field of mobility, which it covers, including the implementation and escalation of actions and pilot projects. CMH belongs the EIT Urban Mobility, the largest innovation ecosystem in the mobility field of the EU, and has plenty experience working with Madrid City Council, large corporations and SMEs. The services of this partner will be aimed mainly at SMEs and public administrations of the Community of Madrid with special emphasis on the area of mobility. CMH is in the phase of establishing collaboration agreements through signed Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation (MoUs) with several European DIHs that include GR digiGOV innoHUB (Greece), DanubeDIH (Romania) and European Business and Innovation Centre Network

    (Belgium).
  • IDC is the coordinator of Di4Air, whose objective is to promote the industrial development and digitization strategy of SMEs and Public Organizations of the Community of Madrid, facilitating access to the "New Space" that carry out their work in the field of air mobility. The services of this partner will be aimed mainly at SMEs and public administrations of the Community of Madrid with special emphasis on the area of mobility. IDC has established contacts with several European DIHs that include VINNOVA: Digital Transformation of the Aviation and Aerospace Industry (Sweden), AURORA Augmenting Norwegian SMEs for Space 4.0 Innovations (Norway) and EDIHAS – Aerospaces (Italy).
  • Alcobendas HUB City Foundation (Alcobendas HUB) is the coordinator of the Intelligent Urban Lab (IUL). The objective of IUL is to promote the digital transformation of companies and Public Administrations through initiatives aimed at facilitating the test-before-invest work philosophy as well as training in key skills and technologies for digital transformation. The services of this partner will be aimed mainly at SMEs in the services sector and public administrations in the Community of Madrid.
  • Asociacion de Empresarios del Henares (AEDHE) is the employers' organization of Corredor del Henares, the most important business center in the Community of Madrid and one of the most important in all of Spain. AEDHE is the coordinator of Madrid Big Data. The main objective of MBD EDIH is to integrate the entire value chain through data and help companies add value to it. The actors to be integrated are supported to help them know and value the data they generate and that they can obtain from their suppliers and customers, up and down the value chain. The services of this partner will be aimed mainly at SMEs in the service and industrial sectors.
  • The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) is the coordinator of Madrid Robotics (RoboCity2030) whose main objective is the generation of knowledge of excellence in Artificial Intelligence transferable to both companies and public administrations. The services of this partner will be aimed mainly at SMEs in the industrial sector and public administrations of the Community of Madrid. UC3M through Robocity2030 has established collaboration agreements through signed MoUs with several European DIHs that include ARTES 5.0 (Italy), CCSAI DIH (Poland), LASER LT DIH (Lithuania), DIH-BIO (Spain), OLTENIA HUB (Romania), UMBRIA DIGITAL DATA (Italy) and Danube DIH (Romania). All of them are working in the same field that RoboCity2030.
  • Asociación de Empresarios del Comercio e Industria del Metal de Madrid (AECIM) is the Madrid Association of Metal Companies, an organization that represents the interests of the Metal Trade, Industry and Services sector in the Community of Madrid. AECIM represents more than 8.000 companies in Madrid Region. AECIM is a partner of Manufacturing DiH (MaDiH). MaDiH has identified a series of fundamental technologies for Industry 4.0 as critical for development within the Madrid productive sector: AI and cognitive systems; bigdata; cybersecurity; simulation and modeling; and additive manufacturing. In this sense, it intends to lead the competitive digitization of Madrid companies from the current industrial reality. The services of this partner will be aimed mainly at SMEs in the industrial sector of the Community of Madrid. AECIM through MaDih has established contacts with several European DIHs that include Sunrise Valley DIH (Lithuania), Aster DIH (Italy).
  • Hewlett-Packard Servicios España (HPE) is a global technology company advancing the way people live and work. The company has led on society’s digital transformation since the very beginning as one of the founders of Silicon Valley in 1939. Following the acquisitions of SGI and Cray, HPE secured its position as the world leader in high-performance computing (HPC) with 40% of global market share. Present in EMEA for over fifty years, with more than 17.000 employees, the company works with businesses and organisations to capture, analyse and act upon data to accelerate business growth and modernise public administrations. The HPE HPC/AI EMEA Research Lab (ERL) is focused on deep technical and strategic engagements: co-design efforts, future systems research and advanced workload research. Technical engagements take the form of in-house innovation projects, Collaboration Centres, Centres of Excellence (CoE), collaborations with existing customers and funded design or co-design projects. HPE is also engaged in European research and development programs, such as Horizon 2020, European networks and platform (ETP4HPC and TERATEC) and is an active player in EC  pre-commercial procurements.

Our sectors

Service Sector

SMEs in the services sector. The services sector is by far, the most important in the Community of Madrid, accounting for 86.6% of the region's total GDP7. This is a figure well above the average for Spain (67.9%).

Mobility

The transport sector (including aeronautics) is also, according to the RIS3 2014-2020 Smart Specialization Strategy, one of the four Strategic sectors in which the "Technological Map of the Community of Madrid" should be deployed. The Community of Madrid has some unique infrastructures such as the Adolfo Suarez-Madrid Barajas Airport, which with nearly 60 million passengers was the most important in Spain and fifth in Europe, and the activity generated by this infrastructure represents 9% of the GDP of the Madrid region. The Madrid Metro is another unique transport infrastructure, its 288 km extension places it in tenth place worldwide.

Manufacturing

The RIS3 2014-2020 Smart Specialization Strategy identified the Nanoscience, Advanced Materials, Industrial and Space Technologies sector, as one of the four Strategic sectors in which the "Technological Map of the Community of Madrid" should be deployed”. On the other hand, the Industrial Plan of the Community of Madrid 2020-2025 aims to increase the weight of industry in the regional aggregate Gross Value Added (GVA) and improve its competitiveness. The weight of industry in the regional aggregate Gross Value Added (GVA) in the Madrid region in 2017 was 11% compared to 18.1% in Spain and 19.6% in the European Union (EU28)8. One of the main purposes of this plan is to increase the use of knowledge, new technologies, and digitization in the industry to provide companies in the Community of Madrid with strategies, initiatives, and actions that help them in this transformation.

Public Administration

The impact that EDIH MADRID REGION will have for the digital transformation of the regional administration is endorsed by the fact that it is the Community of Madrid itself that coordinates the EDIH. On the other hand, the Community of Madrid has 179 municipalities, of which 8 have less than 5,000 inhabitants, 46 have between 5,000 and 20,000 inhabitants, 12 have between 20,000 and 50,000 inhabitants and only 23 have more than 50,000 inhabitants. The acceleration of the digital transformation in the municipal sphere is a priority clearly detected by the Vice-Ministry of Local Administration and Digitization of the Community of Madrid (coordinator of the EDIH MADRID REGION), which has among its objectives the achievement of a 100% digitized Administration in 2025.
